The Roman Empire. Founded by Caesar Julius I from the ruins of the failed Roman Republic, growing at its height to encompass all of Western Europe, Northern Africa and the Syrian and Anatolian peninsulas.
Rome’s chief early rivals were the Greeks, Carthaginians, Egyptians and Gauls, who were each eventually conquered. In later years Rome warred with the Seleucid Persian Empire, the Turkmen, and both human and monstrous barbarians from Germany and the Russian Steppes. They also established mostly peaceful relationships with the Sorcerer Kings of Africa and traded with people as far as the Dragon Kingdoms.
As pressure from the Goblin Hordes to the East grew, the Empire saw a massive influx of human refugees. At first these newcomers – the Germans, Goths, Huns and Franks, provided a skilled base of troops to press into military service against the Goblins and Persians. But once the initial military threat had been overcome, social and economic problems eventually split the First Empire into numerous successors.
